A motion is a formal request to a judge to make a ruling or take some other action during a lawsuit. A motion does not start a lawsuit, but rather brings a limited, contested issue in a case before the court for a decision. 

Motions made be in writing, or in person at a hearing with both sides present. Motion practice involves important rules regarding timing, notice and other matters directed by the Montana Rules of Civil Procedure.
